A collaboration artwork by myself and Breeyn McCarney. In Breeyn's own words:
Black Prince, so named for the velvety black coleus I fell in love with in the park but didn’t have any idea what they were called. I wanted them very specifically for this project.
This piece has so much special meaning to me - it is one of the earliest collaborations with artist Dory Whynot. I had admired her original painting for a long time, and was lowkey blown away that she was so chill with me taking it and piling things on top of it. We're bffs now, but at the time, it was a huge extension of trust, and I was so happy with the process and result.
This piece was super challenging - I’m sure the gravity that I put on the task of doing justice to her work factored in, but also, this was just one giant ball of pushing and learning, and at every single opportunity, this piece pushed back. Hard. Prince Crowley and I fought, and it was a very spirited tussle (that sounds so much sexier than it was). I think we came to terms in the end. Created by printing Dory's painting on to cotton and stitching it into the layers of the frame, then surrounding him with black thorns, roses, and black prince coleus. This piece measures 10 inches by 10 inches and is ready to hang.
